The Gallimaufry Ensemble Shelly Organ Peter Sparks Louisa Sparks Holly Randall Alexia Cammish
Calling all double reed players!
Come and join Shelly and Holly for a weekend of music-making in the beautiful setting of Madingley Hall in Cambridge.

Course dates: 30 May - 1 June 2014

We will begin the course with a short informal tutors' concert followed by a chamber music session, in which all the participants will have the chance to play together and get to know each other.

Three individual instrument workshops will focus on specified pieces from the core repertoire. Each of these workshops will include discussion of the historical context of the work being studied and its composer, and examination of important recordings. Participants will be given the opportunity to perform a section of the piece if they wish, and to work on various musical and technical aspects as they arise.

The tutors will demonstrate instruments from the baroque period and discuss their history and performance practice. Participants may prepare a movement of a baroque sonata or concerto of their choice to work on with the tutors.

There will also be classes on reed making and adjustment, and instrumental technique.

Madingley Hall is a 16th-century country house set in seven acres of landscaped gardens. It is just three miles west of Cambridge, and only 60 minutes from London.

As a weekend student, you will enjoy award-winning cuisine in the elegant dining room and first-rate facilities in an atmospheric and inspiring setting. You can choose to stay at the Hall for the duration of your course, or attend as a non-resident.

The aim in all of our classes and workshops is to inspire the participants to enjoy, appreciate and develop further participation in music, whether as listener, composer or performer.

Our workshop can be presented by itself, or linked to an evening concert so that participants have the opportunity to further their understanding and appreciation through performance. This can also offer the opportunity of a wider audience for the concert.

Chamber Music Courses
In 2013 we began a residency at Girton College, Cambridge, giving chamber music workshops, instrumental classes, and side-by-side workshops.

From 2011-2013, we ran the popular Wind Chamber Music course at the Dartington International Summer School.

More chamber music courses are in the pipeline, so please check this page again soon or join our mailing list!

Masterclasses
The Gallimaufry Ensemble offers coaching to performers (soloists and ensembles) at all levels.

We work on aspects of performance, interpretation, technique and ensemble skills. Where appropriate we are happy to demonstrate / play alongside participants. We hope to be able to offer an insight into the piece being studied and to help bring to life the composer's intentions.

Composer Workshops
We also enjoy taking composition workshops in schools and universities using compositions by the students, giving them a chance to hear their pieces played by professional musicians and benefit from the insight we can offer as performers. We can explore together the highly individual textural and tonal qualities of the wind quintet using combinations of instruments. We also advise and demonstrate individual instrumental capabilities - the restrictions and the possibilities on offer.

We can present a workshop by itself or link it to an evening concert, so that the students have a chance to share their work in performance.

Educational Workshops for Children
The Gallimaufry Ensemble has wide experience in giving entertaining and informative concert-presentations to children. Our presentations use familiar pieces arranged to show off the different instruments and styles of music. We also involve the participants directly, giving them the opportunity to conduct the ensemble, and to direct a free improvisation using musical material provided by them.

Corporate Workshops

Through the medium of music we explore the roles of each individual and how they come together to create a cohesive team.
